sorry i hate when people do all caps but if it got your attention then.. yayy.
hahah

okay well i do school sports in the fall and winter (field hockey and swimming)
so im fit(not in the UK sense of the word) , im not like butch muscular just toned i guess,
i used to do gymnastics so i am still pretty flexible and i play piano so i have some rhythm

im 14 in 9th grade, 5’3”-4” ish and weigh about 130lb

i really want to try out dancing.. i danced when i was younger but quit at about 5 haha so i want to start back up! i dont remember any positions.. or moves or anything but i can probably learn that fast

now since i do a fall sport i need to decide only one to do, so in order to decide which sport to choose i need to try out dance,

buuuuuut most studios begin their years in the fall…notttt the spring.. in order to do the recitals (i live in southeast VA incase you know of any studios that offer what i need)

**SO. HERES THE QUESTION.**

will i be able to just jump into a beginners class late february and catch up? or will i be completely lost? if i did so i might not do the recital although i would like to i doubt ill be anywhere near ready..
should i do a camp over summer instead??
other suggestions??

if i do dance ill probably do a mix of or just some of the following: ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, eventually pointe

You can jump into a class whenever. They don’t mind, I mean, they doo want your money…

Some classes use alot of those terms, some don’t. You might want to read up for a refresher, and work on your fliexibility and abs. Get your splits. Abs are very important to a dancer, work turns, leaps, ect.

well i have done ballet for about 5years im 18 now, its important that people start young at ballet, but i started a year younger then you i started at level 2 so i was with really young girls like 8years old lol but i eventually got better and went onto level 5 ( i am nearly on pointe) because your in america im not sure about when you should start, here in the uk i just went to a ballet school/studio in my area. I think you should call up the dance studio and ask them about it, but do mention your a gymnastic because as you said your flexible and of course that helps you in something like ballet.Oh and it doesnt really matter if you dont know any moves or steps as long as dance is a passion of yours and you have rhym you’ll be great.

I would recommend jazz. I did the same thing when I was 12, I started taking classes in December though. But I started in December. Just don’t get frustrated if you don’t catch on right away. It took me a year to become a confident dancer.

Most of the classes I have ever done begin their recital pieces as early as December, finish at the end of March and use April to clean it up (with a recital in May). So although they would probably let you join in (depending on how professional your school is) it might be hard to learn two months’ worth of dance in that time. But if you practice at home you could probably make it. Also in my experience, each class has a separate piece for each class you take, meaning that for each class you decide to do, you’ll be learning a whole new choreography to do.
So if you don’t want to do the recital it’s understandable, but bear in mind that your classes will mostly be preparation for your recital which you won’t be a part of so i don’t know if that will be boring for you.
These are just some points to consider, sorry if it sounds like I’m discouraging you. I still think you should go for it! ?

While I do think that everyone should have the chance to dance, I think that you should wait until a new year of dance to start. I say this because many other people, just like you, and tried to come into our dance classes in the middle of the year, but they simply cannot do it. They cannot enter in our normal level class, because we have two shows a year, and coming in this late in the year isn’t possible (to learn choreography and such). So, we have had some people join classes that do not do choreography, who are just like you: they’re flexible and in shape. However, they cannot keep up with our class because they have little-to-none dance training. Dancing in pre-k doesn’t help much.

I’m sorry if this sounds harsh, but I have seen many people like you try to attempt what you are trying to do. It really is not worth it in the long run. HOWEVER, if you do want to dance, you should join at the beginning of the year. This gives you and everyone else a clean slate, and allows you and them to begin at the same spot.
